The Online Master of Public Health (OOMPH) at UC Berkeley was launched in 2012 to expand access to public health education, catering to working professionals around the globe. OOMPH offers a flexible yet rigorous program that brings Berkeley’s esteemed public health expertise to an online format, making it accessible for those balancing careers, family, and other commitments.

Program Leadership and Development

Founded by Dr. Nap Hosang, we sought to provide a quality education that would be both flexible and academically robust. His vision was supported by a dedicated faculty team, who continue to shape the program to adapt to emerging needs in public health. Today, Dr. Deborah Barnett serves as the chief of curriculum and instruction, maintaining a high standard of excellence that aligns with Berkeley’s legacy.

Timeline

2012: Program Inception

  • The Online Master of Public Health (OOMPH) program is launched to make public health education accessible to working professionals. Dr. Nap Hosang, OOMPH’s founder, establishes an initial hybrid format combining online courses with in-person sessions.

2013-2014: Early Growth and Curriculum Expansion

  • OOMPH sees its first cohort graduate, solidifying interest and demand.
  • The program begins to expand its curriculum, offering core public health disciplines, including epidemiology, biostatistics, and health policy. 

2015: Specializations Introduced

  • To better support diverse career paths, OOMPH introduces specialized tracks such as health management and global health, allowing students to customize their learning to specific fields within public health.

2016: Making strides

  • The School graduates its 100th student from the On-Campus/Online MPH degree program and begins offering an HPM concentration for students who will enroll in OOMPH starting in January 2017.

2017: Recognition and Program Innovation

  • OOMPH is recognized as a leading online MPH program, praised for its academic rigor and innovative online learning methods.
  • The program implements improved online group projects and interactive learning models, enhancing student engagement and collaboration in a virtual setting.

2018: New Residence

2020: Response to COVID-19

  • As COVID-19 becomes a global health emergency, OOMPH sees a significant increase in applications from individuals seeking to impact public health.
  • New modules on pandemic response, epidemiology, and health disparities are introduced, enabling students to better understand and address pressing issues related to COVID-19.

2022: 10-Year Anniversary and Future Outlook

  • OOMPH celebrates its 10th anniversary, reflecting on a decade of contributions to public health education.
  • The program rolls out new data science modules and reaffirms its commitment to expanding access and equity in public health education.
  • OOMPH announces plans for further growth, including additional specializations and partnerships with global health organizations.

2023: Expansion of Applied Learning Opportunities

  • OOMPH introduces applied learning opportunities, allowing students to gain hands-on experience with real-world public health data and case studies.

2024: Continued Innovation and Global Partnerships

  • OOMPH continues to expand its program offerings, with a focus on global health partnerships and advanced specializations aimed at addressing emerging public health challenges worldwide.
